Hedge Trimming
and Formative Pruning
Precision hedge trimming for residential, acreage and commercial properties across Brisbane and SEQ. Large boundary screens, formal feature hedges, topiary and difficult access situations. Specialist equipment and a clean finish every time.
A well-trimmed hedge is one of the most impactful things on a property's presentation. It signals attention to detail. It defines spaces, creates structure and provides genuine privacy when it's healthy and dense.
Getting there requires sharp equipment, knowledge of how the species actually grows, and the reach to work safely at height. Cambium brings all three. Whether your hedge needs an annual shaping, a significant height reduction or a renovation back from years of neglect, we deliver a clean, consistent result.
Hedge trimming and pruning services
Regular shaping of established hedges to maintain clean lines, consistent height and dense wall structure. We work to a high presentation standard on every visit, trimming to enhance the hedge's natural form and encourage lateral growth.
Significant height reductions on overgrown hedges, including large Murraya, Lilly Pilly, Viburnum and Ficus hedges. Formative renovation of neglected or uneven hedges to restore structure and density over one to two growth cycles.
We use specialist tripod ladders with adjustable legs and elevated access equipment for hedges over pools, on slopes, against fences and in other difficult access situations. Heights that most contractors decline are standard for us.
Cloud topiary, geometric forms and shaped feature plants for formal gardens and prestige properties. Precise hand tools and an eye for symmetry and scale.
Regular maintenance visits on a schedule suited to the species and your presentation standards. Well-maintained hedges trimmed regularly grow denser and stay healthier than those trimmed infrequently after long gaps.
All green waste removed from your property on every job. A significant hedge reduction on a mature Murraya screen can produce considerable volume. We have the equipment to remove it cleanly so your site stays tidy.
The right tools make the difference
Most hedge trimming problems come down to equipment. Blunt blades tear rather than cut, leaving brown shredded edges that stress the plant. Unstable ladders create safety risk. Standard equipment can't safely reach tall hedges over pools or structures.
We invest in the right equipment and maintain it properly. Sharp blades on every job. Specialist access for difficult situations. Commercial-grade power tools for large-scale work.
Commercial-grade machines with sharp, properly maintained blades. Clean cuts that promote healthy regrowth rather than tearing leaf tissue.
Adjustable-leg tripod ladders that work safely on slopes, in garden beds and against structures where standard ladders are unstable.
For very tall hedges and difficult situations where ladder access isn't sufficient or safe. We bring the right equipment, not the closest thing.
For detailed topiary, formal shaping and finishing work where powered equipment would sacrifice precision. Properly sharpened before every use.
We know how the species grows
Murraya paniculata flowers on new growth and should be trimmed after flowering to encourage bushing. Lilly Pilly varieties have different growth habits and respond differently to hard reduction. Viburnum hedges need different management again to maintain density.
Trimming all hedges the same way produces inconsistent results. We understand the growth habits and seasonal requirements of the species we're working with, and we time our work accordingly.
Common Brisbane hedge species we work with regularly include Murraya, Lilly Pilly, Viburnum, Photinia, Ficus, Camellia, Box (Buxus), Plumbago, Grevillea and native species hedges.
What affects the cost of hedge trimming in Brisbane
Hedge trimming costs vary with size, access, species and current condition. We quote after seeing the hedges in person.
The primary driver of time and cost. A 50-metre boundary screen at 3 metres high is a very different scope to a 10-metre feature hedge at 1.5 metres.
Hedges over pools, on slopes, behind garden beds or against structures require specialist access equipment and take longer than hedges with clear, flat access on both sides.
A hedge trimmed regularly takes less time than one left for 12 months. Significant height reductions on neglected hedges produce more waste and require more careful work to avoid structural damage.
Fast-growing species need more frequent attention. Dense species like Murraya require more passes than open-growing species. Topiary and formal shaping takes more time than straight line trimming.
Large reductions on mature screens produce significant green waste. Removal and disposal is included in our price, but high-volume jobs add time to the visit.
Hedges on regular maintenance schedules (two to four times per year) take less time per visit than hedges trimmed infrequently. Programmed visits are better value over the course of a year.
Most residential hedge trimming jobs start from $280. Large acreage and commercial properties are quoted after a site visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should hedges be trimmed in Brisbane?
Most Brisbane hedge species benefit from two to four trims per year depending on growth rate and your presentation standards. Fast-growing species like Murraya and Lilly Pilly may need trimming every six to eight weeks through the warmer months to stay clean. Slower-growing species may be fine with one or two trims a year. We recommend the right frequency for your specific species and hedges during the site consultation.
Can you reduce an overgrown hedge back significantly?
In most cases, yes. The degree of reduction that's safe depends on the species and its current health. Murraya handles hard reductions well and pushes new growth reliably. Lilly Pilly can be reduced significantly but benefits from staged reductions over two growth cycles for very neglected hedges. We assess the hedge condition first and give you an honest view of what's achievable and what timeline to expect.
Do you trim hedges over pools and in difficult access areas?
Yes. Hedges over pools, on slopes and against structures are something we manage regularly. We use specialist tripod ladders with adjustable legs that work safely where standard ladders won't. For very tall hedges requiring elevated access we bring the right equipment for the job rather than improvising with what's available.
Why are my hedge edges going brown after trimming?
Brown edges after trimming are almost always caused by blunt blades. When blades are dull they tear rather than cut cleanly, crushing and shredding the leaf tissue at the trim line. The damaged tissue browns and dies. Sharp blades produce a clean cut that heals quickly and doesn't leave brown edges. If you've experienced this before, it's a direct sign the contractor was using poorly maintained equipment.
Do you provide regular scheduled maintenance?
Yes. Most of our hedge trimming clients are on scheduled programs with visits two to four times a year. Regular scheduled trimming keeps hedges denser, healthier and more manageable than irregular trimming after long gaps. We set up a schedule after the first visit and manage it from there.
Are you insured?
Yes. Cambium Land Management holds current public liability insurance. We are happy to provide a certificate of currency on request.
