How to eradicate Red Ochna in South-East Queensland

The Ochna serrulata, commonly known as the Mickey Mouse Plant or Red Ochna, is a highly invasive environmental weed posing a serious threat to South East Queensland's (SEQ) natural bushland and native ecosystems.

To quickly identify it, look for the unique combination of the fruit - shiny black berries clustered on a swollen, bright red base (the "Mickey Mouse" feature), and its dark green, glossy leaves with finely serrated/toothed margins. It grows as a woody shrub, typically 1–4 metres high, forming dense thickets that outcompete native vegetation.

While Red Ochna is not a restricted invasive plant, all SEQ residents have a General Biosecurity Obligation (GBO) to minimise its risks. For small plants, dig out the entire plant, removing the tap root completely. For larger shrubs, use the Cut-Stump method: cut the trunk and immediately apply a concentrated Glyphosate solution to the fresh stump. Remove all plants before they produce fruit and ensure consistent follow-up treatment of re-sprouts.
