Lantana Control and
Invasive Weed Management

Lantana is SEQ's most widespread environmental weed. Controlling it properly requires a systematic program, not a single treatment. Mechanical clearing, targeted herbicide and scheduled follow-up visits timed to species biology.

Servicing SEQ from Rocklea

Lantana camara is a Restricted Matter under Queensland's Biosecurity Act 2014. Every landowner in SEQ has a General Biosecurity Obligation to manage it. Left unchecked it forms dense thickets that choke creek lines, smother native regeneration, poison livestock and carry fire from the ground into the canopy.

The frustrating reality is that a single treatment rarely produces lasting results. The seed bank persists for years. Regrowth is vigorous. Populations treated once and not followed up reliably return to previous density within two to three growing seasons. Effective control requires a program — assessment, primary treatment, and scheduled follow-up visits timed to lantana's biology.

Target Species

The declared and environmental weeds we manage

Lantana

Lantana camara
Restricted Matter

SEQ's most widespread environmental weed. Forms impenetrable thickets along creek lines, in paddocks and under canopy. Toxic to livestock. Prevents native regeneration. Produces prolific seed dispersed by birds across wide areas.

Treatment: Foliar spray at the right phenological stage for large infestations. Cut-stump or stem injection for woody specimens in sensitive areas. Multi-year follow-up program essential to exhaust the seed bank.

Cat's Claw Creeper

Dolichandra unguis-cati
Restricted Matter

Smothers canopy trees and forms dense underground tuber networks that persist for years after surface treatment. Kills mature eucalypts and Moreton Bay figs. Requires targeted multi-season management to genuinely reduce populations.

Treatment: Cut-stump on climbing vines to protect trees while herbicide penetrates the system. Foliar spray on ground carpets. Underground tuber management and scheduled follow-up based on germination cycles.

Camphor Laurel

Cinnamomum camphora
Environmental Weed

Aggressively displaces native canopy species across creek lines and gullies. Allelopathic, meaning it actively suppresses native seedling regeneration beneath its canopy. Produces prolific seed dispersed by birds across wide areas.

Treatment: Basal bark or cut-stump herbicide treatment to prevent reshooting. Larger specimens may require staged management. Native revegetation into cleared areas prevents reinvasion.

Madeira Vine

Anredera cordifolia
Restricted Matter

Climbing vine that smothers riparian vegetation and snaps tree branches under its weight. Reproduces via aerial tubers that drop and regenerate independently. Mechanical removal of live vines without prior treatment spreads the infestation.

Treatment: Scrape-and-paint or stem injection before any physical removal. Timing and sequence are critical. Follow-up essential as surviving tubers germinate through the season.

Privet

Ligustrum spp.
Environmental Weed

Both broad-leaf and small-leaf privet establish readily along creek lines and forest margins. Heavy seed production via bird dispersal generates persistent reinfestation pressure from neighbouring properties and remnant vegetation.

Treatment: Basal bark or cut-stump for established plants. Foliar spray at seedling stage for young infestations. Follow-up visits critical given ongoing seed rain from adjacent areas.

Groundsel Bush

Baccharis halimifolia
Restricted Matter

Rapidly colonises cleared and disturbed land, fence lines and paddock margins. Produces masses of windborne seed. Dense infestations develop quickly from a small initial population. Early intervention before seed set is significantly more cost-effective than managing established thickets.

Treatment: Foliar spray before flowering or cut-stump on established plants. Timing to prevent seed set is critical. Monitoring for new seedlings in following seasons essential.

Our Approach

Treatment matched to species, terrain and site

Targeted Herbicide Application

Foliar spray, cut-stump, basal bark, stem injection and splatter gun techniques selected based on species biology, plant size, proximity to watercourses and site sensitivity. Licensed operators using registered products with full application records maintained for every visit.

Mechanical Clearing

Our Avant 745 articulated loader with heavy-duty flail mower handles dense lantana thickets and woody regrowth that would take days to clear by hand. Brush grapple for debris management. Commercial wood chipper for on-site processing where required.

Herbicide-Free Options

For organic operations, sensitive ecological areas and sites where chemical use isn't appropriate, we design mechanical and manual control programs. These are more labour-intensive but effective for many species when combined with strategic revegetation to prevent reinvasion.

Revegetation Integration

Where weed removal opens ground that will reinvade without competition, strategic native planting is part of the management strategy. We integrate revegetation into weed programs where it will meaningfully reduce long-term reinfestation pressure.

Why Lantana Is Difficult to Control

The seed bank problem

Lantana produces prolific seed that remains viable in the soil for three to five years. A single flowering plant can set hundreds of seeds, each one dispersed by birds across your property and neighbouring land. A treatment program that kills every plant currently visible does nothing to the seed bank already in the ground.

This is why follow-up visits timed to germination cycles are the difference between a program that reduces lantana load over time and one that produces a temporary result every two years. We design follow-up schedules around lantana's biology and the specific conditions on your site. The goal is genuine reduction in weed load, not maintenance of the status quo.

How We Work

From assessment to ongoing control

Site assessment

We walk your property, identify every weed species present, map infestation extent and density, assess terrain and access, and understand your land management goals. You receive a written management plan and transparent quote for the work.

Primary treatment

Mechanical clearing, manual removal and targeted herbicide treatment across priority areas. We work systematically, section by section. Full herbicide application records maintained throughout. Before and after photos at every visit.

Follow-up and monitoring

Scheduled return visits timed to lantana's germination cycles and your property's seasonal conditions. Regrowth and new seedlings treated before they flower. Program adjusted based on what we observe on the ground.

Revegetation where needed

Where persistent lantana infestations benefit from native competition, we integrate revegetation into the program. Dense native groundcover and shrub layers are one of the most effective long-term tools against lantana reinvasion.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments does lantana need?

Lantana is difficult to control with a single treatment because of its persistent seed bank. Most properties see genuinely reduced lantana density after two to three years of systematic treatment. The first year establishes the baseline and treats the visible infestation. Years two and three focus on new seedlings germinating from the soil seed bank. Follow-up visits are not optional for lasting results.

Is lantana a declared weed in Queensland?

Yes. Lantana camara is a Restricted Matter under Queensland's Biosecurity Act 2014. All landowners have a General Biosecurity Obligation to manage it on their property. Some local government areas issue biosecurity notices requiring active management programs. We provide documentation of treatment programs for landowners who need to demonstrate compliance.

Can you control lantana without herbicide?

Yes. Mechanical clearing with our Avant 745 flail mower is effective for large dense infestations and can be followed by manual removal and native revegetation to prevent regrowth. Herbicide-free programs are more labour-intensive and cost more per hectare treated, but we design them for properties where chemical use is not appropriate. The key is combining physical removal with enough revegetation to out-compete regrowth.

What does the $250 site assessment include?

We visit your property and conduct a thorough weed assessment. We identify every species present, map infestation extent, assess terrain and access, and develop a written management plan outlining treatment methods, scheduling and realistic expectations for weed load reduction. The $250 assessment fee is credited in full to your first treatment invoice if you proceed.

Do you treat lantana along creek banks?

Yes. Lantana is particularly problematic in riparian zones and creek lines across SEQ. We hold the relevant certifications for chemical work adjacent to watercourses and follow Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries guidelines for all riparian herbicide applications.

Are you insured?

Yes. Cambium Land Management holds current public liability insurance. We are happy to provide a certificate of currency on request.
